Hauoli Malama Hou

Aloha ka pō Hilo a ka Malama Ikiiki!

Aloha malama Ikiiki!

Happy first light of the new moonth, the first malama of Summer or hot season!

Hooilo is complete, and Kauwela is just beginning.

As always, check out wehewehe.org if need English-Hawaii Dictionary!

These paikii feature Hilo, the first light of the Moon, together with Venus, approaching Makalii (the Pleides) and Taurus.

Keia po Hilo, Mahina is at her perigee in her elliptical orbit it, and so closest to Earth, appearing largest (despite only being a thin sliver), and moving fastest.

When Mahina is moving fast or slow in her cycle makes a big difference in the appearance of ka Mahina during each po mahina.

Mahina moves about 12 degrees when slower at her apogee (farther from the Earth), and about 15 degrees when faster at her perigee (closer to the Earth). Thus her shape can change more rapidly at perigee, and she can linger more when at her apogee.
